In Iowa, child support is calculated using a statutory formula, which includes a number of factors, such as
- the income of both parents
- the amount of time each parent spends with the child
- the number or children for whom support is paid
- the number of additional dependents
- other issues, such as tax exemptions, union dues, mandatory pension payments and health insurance
Child support is generally determined by applying this formula, but exceptions can be made upon a showing of good cause.
